Ambassador Dr. Shankar Balachandran and his spouse Mrs. Hema Chandran hosted a farewell drink at Bharat Bhavan- the official residence of the Ambassador, on 17 May 2024. The Ambassador is retiring from Government service this month.

The Hon’ble President of Suriname H.E Mr.Chandrikapersad Santokhi accompanied by the first Lady Mrs.Mellisa Santokhi-Seenacherry graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Hon’ble Chairman of DNA H.E.Mr.Marinus Bee, Hon’ble Ministers Amb H.E.Mr.Albert Ramchand Ramdin (Foreign Affairs), Mrs.Krishnakoemari Mathoera (Defence), Prof Henry Ravinderdath Ori (Education), Dr.Riad Nurmohamed (Public Works) and Mrs.Rishma Kuldip Singh (Economic Affairs), Heads of Diplomatic Missions and International Organisations, friends of India, PIOs, NRIs and the Embassy colleagues honoured the Ambassador with their presence.

The Ambassador in his farewell remarks thanked President Santokhi and his team, sisters and brothers of Suriname for the cooperation he received in realising a high status of India-Suriname partnership in many spheres. He felt at home in Suriname. All his 40 year long career, he strived to perform his duties without the trappings of authority, reach out to all in need by remaining approachable, in keeping with his personal philosophy of service to humanity. He would continue to do so till his last breath.

President Santokhi appreciated the Ambassador’s tireless efforts and contribution to the deepening of relations between the two nations, marked by high level visits, debt restructuring, over USD 10 million worth of grant projects, donations, training opportunities, agriculture and defence cooperation, cultural activities, etc and welcomed him to visit Suriname to witness the foundations he had laid.

The farewell ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks by Second Secretary Mr. Ramji.
